Releasing a little bit of stress through swinging your club as hard as you can is sometimes extremely rewarding but in reality it's best left on the driving range where you don't have any hazards to deal with. While trying to knock the cover off the ball might leave you feeling strong and powerful it's unlikely to help develop your golf game. This is one of the most common mistakes that new or even seasoned golfer's make, trying to hit the ball just that little bit too hard and in doing so accuracy goes out the window, and it's accuracy that's going to make all the difference to your game in the long run.
Putting too much effort into your golf swing can cause you to develop tension in your arms and muscles which in turn can throw you off balance causing you to have an inaccurate shot. You need to ensure that you feel relaxed and are swinging the club with the right amount of power, you only need to use enough power so that you can control it, and distance will come from having developed a smooth, correct swing. You can reduce your power by putting your feet slightly closer together and also by ensuring you swing well within your capabilities, you'll find that you'll be able to tell when you've hit the ball correctly as it will have felt easy and smooth.
An important component of a fluid, accurate golf swing is a decent center of gravity which stays consistent. You need to keep your feet planted firmly in the same position throughout the swing and your head still with your eyes on the ball. By keeping your weight concentrated in your feet during your swing you'll be able to have a more stable center of gravity and ensure you don't jerk your body or move your head. These things can cause you to have a poor swing and end up with an inaccurate shot so you want to focus on the ball and swing smoothly.
If you suffer from a slice here's a quick tip to help you overcome it; try to keep the ball low and hit the ball with the center of your club as closely as possible. The wind has a tendency to emphasize a slice so the higher the ball goes the more the wind can influence it left or right.
With a smooth, consistent and accurate swing at your disposal you will then find it much easier to work on increasing your power to gain that extra distance.
