Hitting a golf ball well requires a lot of skill. The driver is one of the most enjoyable clubs to hit but it can also be the toughest to hit consistently well. It requires a combination of good swing mechanics and power to hit long and straight. One of the keys to a better driver swing is to make sure that you are using a driver that is matched to your swing type.
Driver Selection Tips:
If you have a swing that generates over 100 mph club head speeds then you should get a driver with a stiff flex shaft and around 9 to 9.5 degrees of loft. On the other hand, if you have less than 100 mph club head speeds then you need to get a driver with a regular to senior flex shaft and around 10.5 to 11 degrees of loft. When setting up with the driver, the ball should be placed lined up with your left foot - this applies to right handed players and of course the opposite would apply to left handed players.
In order to hit the driver far the key is to understand how to take full advantage of the concept of leverage. Lag or leverage is what the pros know how to use very well in order to seemingly effortlessly hit the ball far. The idea is to release the club at the last possible moment thus creating the most club head speed through the impact zone. Focus on pulling the club through the hitting zone with your left hand as this will promote an inside to out swing path that will generate the most club head speed and prevent you from casting the club or releasing too early which generally results in poor distance and direction.
