Golf Shotmaking Tips

Many courses demand knowing how to work the ball and it is very useful to know how to hit a draw or a fade consistently as this will increase your odds of hitting the fairway and shooting lower scores. Here are some tips to help you learn how to hit certain shots:

The Draw:

This shot is very useful and can also help you get a lot more distance from the tee with your driver. The first step is to ensure that your clubface is slightly closed at the address position as this will encourage draw spin at impact. Also make sure you have a closed stance which means that your right foot is slightly behind your left foot or your feet are pointing to the right of the target (This applies to right handed players). In addition make sure to make a full follow through with a low finish.

The Fade:

This shot requires the opposite technique to that of a draw. You want to make sure that your club face is slightly open at address which means that it is facing to the right of the target. Also your stance needs to be closed to promote an outside to in club path. A closed stance means that your feet are lined up to point to the left of the target. When it comes to the finish you want to have a higher finish than normal as this will promote fade spin on the golf ball.

The Hook Golf Swing:

While the hook in general is considered a bad shot there are times when hitting this shot may be necessary if you want to get close to the green after a bad tee shot. First of all, make sure you have a lie that you know you can make solid contact from. If the ball is buried in a tough lie then do not try this shot, instead just pitch out into the fairway and take your medicine. Make sure your club face is closed quite significantly for this shot and also adjust your stance so it is pointing to the right of the target more than a normal draw shot.

The Slice:

No one likes hitting a slice shot by mistake however you may find yourself in situations where you need to execute this shot deliberately in order to get the ball closer to the hole or on the green. Again, like the hook shot do not try this unless you have a fairly good lie where you know you can make solid ball contact.  You want to open the club face quite significantly for this shot and also have a closed stance. The setup is similar to a fade shot however your stance is more closed and the club face is more open at address.

Hitting a Low Punch Shot:

Sometimes you will find yourself under a tree and in order to get the ball on the green you will need to hit a low shot under a branch. You will need to use a low lofted club like a 3 iron or 5 iron depending on how low the shot needs to be. A common mistake is to put the ball too far back in the stance so avoid doing this. Instead, keep the ball lined up with your left foot and take a short backswing and follow through. Click here to learn more on how to improve at golf.
