How To Improve Your Golf Putting Skills

Putting is an important part of golf and can make a big difference in improving your scores. It is the least physical aspect of golf so it does require a good mental approach in order to be good at it. Of course, putting mechanics are still important so it is important to develop and groove your putting stroke. If you are beginner then consider taking a lesson or two on the mechanics from a local golf pro. Pick a putting style you like and stick with it. If you are constantly changing putting techniques then you will never develop a high level of consistency and performance on the greens.

How to avoid putting yips:

The yips usually result from a lack of confidence on the greens so if you can learn to maintain high confidence levels then your chances of getting the yips are very low. Building a solid putting routine is the first step in maintaining high confidence levels. The first part of the routine involves reading the greens and coming up with a decisive read. Do not rush reading the greens but see the putt from a few different angles and then trust your instincts. If you are in doubt then decide to go with your first impression as that is usually the most accurate.

Remember that no one reads greens perfectly all the time so do not obsess over making a perfect read each and every time. Once you have made a decisive read then simply step over the putt and look and react to your target. The target must be the main focus during the putting stroke and not putting mechanics. Do not spend too much time over the ball as this will make it easier for doubts to creep in so release the trigger as soon as you can.

It is important to not dwell on your mistakes. We all mishit a putt every now and then or misread a green, choose instead to have a selective memory and remember only the good putts. Make it a habit to remind yourself of the good shots you have hit and try to forget the bad ones. Spend time grooving your putting stroke at home if you do not have too much time to practice on the course. Click here for more tips on how to improve your golf scores..
