Tips On Course Management To Help You Play Better Golf
Managing the golf course effectively can definitely make you a better player very quickly since the changes are all mental. Most amateurs are far too aggressive on the course and end up getting themselves into all kinds of unnecessary trouble. You are better off being more conservative in your strategy on the golf course and play the shots you know you can successfully execute at least 90% of the time. For instance most courses have a few short par 4 holes where you will often see most amateurs immediately pull out driver and try to hit it as far down the fairway as possible. The problem with this approach is that driver is the most difficult club to hit straight so even the slightest mishit can result in the ball ending up in a hazard or out of bounds.
Keep the ball in play:
It is far more important to keep the ball in the fairway even if it means you have a longer approach shot in. You are much better off with a 150 yard approach into the green from the fairway than a 120 yard approach from an awkward lie in the rough. You hear the pros say it all the time that the key to shooting low scores is hitting fairways and greens in regulation so be sure to do whatever it takes to hit the fairway first and then focus on hitting the green with high percentage approach shots. Sometimes you may be tempted to go for a tight pin placement that is very close to a hazard. In these cases most amateurs would be wise to focus on the middle of the green instead and leave themselves a slightly longer putt for birdie. Par is a good score on holes where the pin is in a tough position so do not get overly aggressive and try to be a hero on the course.
If you do get in trouble then it is important to get the ball back in play. You need to know your limits and what you can and cannot do so do not think that just because a pro would go for the green that you should too. Know your strengths and if you hit a poor shot then accept the mistake and consider a bogey to be a good score, do not get cocky and try to make birdie from the woods which will usually result in you making a much worse score than bogey.
